SUFFOLK COUNTY HALF MARATHON RUNNERS TRIUMPH IN GREECE

West Babylon, NY - Nov. 10 2000

A group of 41 people on a fun excursion to Athens, Greece along with 23 American runners including the overall winners of the 2000 Suffolk County Half Marathon, went to compete in the original Athens Marathon on Sunday November 5, 2000.

The trip to Athens, Greece was organized by the AHEPA-Suffolk County Half Marathon together with Elite Universal Travel, as part of the grand prize and promotion of the Suffolk County Half Marathon. The race followed the original path of the Athens Marathon and 10K races.

The group of athletes made a respectable showing by winning 1-Gold, 1-Silver and 3-Age group medals. The Suffolk County Half Marathon Female Winner (1:21.19.2), Angela Orefice finished in the Athens Marathon overall second 3:03.14.0 and received the silver medal presented by the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Nicholas Burns.

Peter Hammer, the Suffolk County Half Marathon Male Winner (1:08:17:8) finished fourth in Athens Marathon, with a time of 2:26.46.0. Peter's girlfriend, Diana Brouser, took the gold Metal finishing overall first place in the 10 K race with a time of 31.49.0.

The other Americans participating in the Athen's Marathon had the following scores:

Carol McGrain finished first place with a race time of 4:20.28.0 in the Marathon 60/64 age group.

Gloria Harris, 3rd in the 10K, 55/59 age group, with 72.57.0 and Emma Blascovich in the 10K, 60/64 age group, third with 58:39.0.

The group stayed 6 days in Athens and had the opportunity to tour the city and visit the U.S. Embassy, cruise to 3 Islands and visit ancient Corinth.
